Hydro Scheme Construction

Green Highland Renewables Ltd (GH) will shortly be commencing operations to construct two micro hydro electric schemes in Glen Affric at Allt Garbh and Abhainn Gleann nam Fiadh.

Part of the Affric Kintail Way and a section of the bike stage for the  Glen Affric Duathlon will be used for construction vehicle access to the sites.

Work is due to commence at the end of February and will run throughout the remainder of 2016 with a view to completion by April 2017.

Construction work will only take place on weekdays.  There will be NO work carried out at weekends. The route will remain open to the general public at all times.

The Allt Garbh site is located on the south side of Loch Affric just west of the bridge over to River Affric Car Park.  Vehicle access to this site will be the forest road that runs along the southern side of Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhain.  The section involved is from the top of the track that rises from Dog Falls west to Allt Garbh.  The map below shows the route involved which forms part of Stages 2 and 3 of the Affric Kintail Way.  The map should be used in conjunction with the Stage maps available elsewhere on this website and of course OS Maps and Harvey Guides.

GH have put in place strict procedures to minimise any risk to the workforce and the general public.  Warning notices will be placed at strategic points and regular inspections will be carried out by GH and the principal contractor to ensure safety and minimal environmental impact.

However we would ask all those travelling on the Affric Kintail Way during the period of construction to be aware and follow guidance given by notices and any verbal requests from construcion staff.

Having had discussions with GH we are satisfied that the project should in no way detract visitors from enjoying the Affric Kintail Way.  We will be posting further information as we receive it and GH are in process of setting up an information section on their own website and the link to this will be posted as soon as it is in place.

In the meantime if prospective visitors have any concerns or queries please contact us at info@affrickintailway.com and we will do our best to answer you promptly.
