Affric Kintail Way Route MarkerThe Affric Kintail Way is a fully signposted, superb cross-country route for walkers and mountain bikers stretching almost 44 miles from Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness to Morvich in Kintail by Loch Duich. Given the proximity to the Great Glen Way (Inverness - Fort William) it is quite possible to extend your route to/from Drumnadrochit to Inverness and enjoy a spectacular coast to coast trek.

The AKW is recommended for experienced travellers and takes in a variety of landscapes with stunning views - ancient drove roads which used to take cattle to market from the west coast, deep lochs, towering glens, ancient woodlands, The Glen Affric National Nature Reserve and an optional stay at the Alltbeithe Youth Hostel the most remote in the Highlands. Some sections can be quite strenuous and there is in excess of 6000 feet of ascent over the course of the trail.

Surfaces on the Affric Kintail Way are generally very good. Much of the route is on forest tracks but there are sections where it will be wet underfoot and quite rough - these will be especially tricky for the cyclist! There is also a section on public road (Corrimony - Cannich) but there is a good verge that hopefully will not be allowed to get too overgrown.

Strong footwear, warm and waterproof clothing are a must for this route as you will be passing through some remote areas and the weather is liable to change at short notice - even in summer. Given that you are travelling through some of the most beautiful scenery you can help us conserve it by taking all rubbish away with you. At present there are no stiles to cross on the route but there are a number of gates so please ensure they are closed properly after you pass through. Please make yourself aware of all your responsibilities under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

We also hope that those who come to travel the Affric Kintail Way will perhaps extend their trip by taking advantage of what is available in the surrounding areas, from the Monster Exhibitions and Urquhart Castle at Loch Ness to Munro bagging in Glen Affric and the superb Kintail mountains and other great attractions such as the Falls of Glomach and Eilan Donan Castle.
